A 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred near the Greek island of Crete.
A strong 5.9 earthquake hit off the coast of Crete in Greece, Due to earthquake Tsunami warning is given by the Government in some area. Tourist/Locals are advised to get away from the coast.
The warning came out this morning after the earthquake, which happened near Crete. Officials are worried about a possible tsunami, especially near the island of Kasos.
The earthquake's center was in the sea near Crete, and people on nearby islands felt the shaking too.
So far, no one has been reported hurt, and there doesn't seem to be major damage. But officials are still watching closely and telling people to stay alert.
The area around Crete is known for earthquakes. In October 2021, there was a 6.3 earthquake there. Just a few weeks before that, another earthquake killed one person and injured more.
That earlier earthquake in September 2021 damaged many homes and made people leave their houses near the city of Heraklion. Buildings, including schools, were cracked, and people were afraid to sleep inside.
Another strong earthquake, magnitude 6.4, happened near the island of Karpathos in October 2021. Luckily, no one died, but it was felt on nearby islands.
Going further back, a 6.7 earthquake south of Crete in 2006 shook the whole mainland of Greece and woke people up in Athens.
Greece has a lot of earthquakes because it's where two of the Earth's big plates (African and Eurasian) meet. Even though people there are used to the ground shaking, they are always worried about a big earthquake happening.
